Lucy’s favorite spot to sleep was on the big purple comforter on the king-size bed, but we both slept on the floor for several nights because her leg was gingerly held in place with plates and screws, and we needed to be very cautious as it healed and mended.

Lucy couldn’t eat and would only accept water through a dropper. Two days passed when the phone rang again. It was the vet calling with Lucy’s biopsy report. She was dumbfounded: there was no sign of cancer – none. Lucy had beaten all the odds. Four different vets were almost convinced cancer was in her bones, but Lucy surprised us all.

The surgical team was still reeling from the fact that a cat as old as Lucy could endure the rigors of a two-hour surgery. What had been the initial prognosis of cancer and death was replaced by courage, survival and mending: Lucy was determined to live, and there was no stopping her.

Her leg healed well enough for her to walk on it, and she lived for two more glorious years. Lucy was 24 when she finally agreed to move on to her next life. She was my greatest teacher of all that is possible when you have the right mindset and a heart full of courage to back it up. In times when I have had to face surgery and healing from a critical injury, I picture Lucy’s face, and summon the inner courage to go on.

Her regular vet assisted her crossing into her next life. He told me, “You squeezed every ounce of life out of her.” Yep ... and Lucy squeezed right back.
